Dante’s Journey
“The Divine Comedy” is an epic poem by Dante Alighieri between 1308 and 1320. It is widely considered one of the greatest works of world literature and has profoundly influenced Western thought and literature.
The poem narrates Dante’s journey through the realms of Inferno, Purgatorio, and Paradiso, which symbolizes the soul’s path towards God. It’s both a literal journey and an allegory of Christian life, from sin, through repentance, to salvation.
In his epic poem, Dante encounters an eagle. This eagle symbolizes divine justice. Its feathers are made of the souls of just rulers and leaders who, through their actions, reflected God’s justice on Earth.
The eagle speaks with one voice, representing the unity and harmony of divine justice, and it discusses the nature of justice, both divine and human, with Dante, emphasizing the importance of righteousness and the consequences of corruption.
Harriet’s magnificent sculpture of grace, power, and destiny envisions and depicts Dante who, by force of this discourse, is raised by the eagle out of the engulfing flames of Inferno to ascend the mountain of Purgatory. Here, souls are cleansed of their sins before entering Heaven.
